Workshop performance, 2004
Violet Fire was first staged in 2004 at Temple University in Philadelphia. Terry O'Reilly directed singers from the Temple Opera Department and musicians of the Relache Ensemble, conducted by Thaddeus Squire. The performances featured the media design of Sarah Drury and Jen Simmons, sets by Dan Boylen, costumes by Maori Holmes, lighting by Anthony Hostetter, choreography by Philip Grosser and Tesla coils constructed by Chris Vecchio. The performance was supported by Temple University, Meet the Composer, the Five County Arts Fund and individual contributors.

In conjunction with the Philadelphia workshop, the producers of Violet Fire worked with the community-arts organization COSACOSA art at large, Inc. to bring an experience of the artistic and scientific aspects of this production to students from the Kenderton School, a Philadelphia public school near Temple University. Students took part in enrichment activities introducing them to Tesla and to the new interactive media behind the production, and attended a performance of Violet Fire.
